Welcome to the practice of Colon and Rectal Surgeons of Central New Jersey. This office is dedicated solely to the diagnosis and treatment of the diseases of the colon and rectum.
Dr. Patankar offers state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment options for the entire range of illnesses seen in this specialty. He provides surgical and non surgical treatment for proctologic diseases such as hemorrhoids, fissures, fistulas, pilonidal disease, anal warts, and anal cancers. He also performs screening and therapeutic colonoscopy and is skilled at resection of what are deemed as “difficult to remove” polyps.
To evaluate fecal incontinence, severe chronic constipation and pelvic floor dysfunction, the office is equipped with a modern computerized laboratory for anorectal physiology and performance of endoanal and endorectal ultrasound. Dr. Patankar also has an extensive background in research and has published several key articles in this field. Furthermore, since the FDA approval of InterstimTM therapy (sacral nerve stimulation) for fecal incontinence, he has performed a large number of these procedures with excellent results. He also offers Transanal Endoscopic Micro surgery (TEM) and Transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS), which are procedures that are indicated for a highly select group of patients for the removal of early stage rectal cancer and large, sessile rectal polyps. He also performs Transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization (THD) and Stapled hemorrhoidectomy, which aim to minimize the pain that is typically associated with hemorrhoid surgery.
Dr. Patankar works in close collaboration with the finest medical and radiation oncologists in New Jersey and helps to coordinate the adjuvant and neoadjuvant therapy protocols for colorectal cancer. He has extensive experience in open abdominal and pelvic surgery for colorectal cancer, complicated diverticular disease, rectal prolapse, chronic ulcerative colitis, and Crohn’s disease. In his early formative years, he was inspired by Professor Tehemton Udwadia, who is regarded as the father of laparoscopic surgery in India. Dr. Patankar then had the distinct fortune of being trained in the techniques and research methodologies by on of the pioneers in the field of laparocsopic colorectal surgery in the United States in the early 1990s. He presented and published several seminal articles in this field when laparoscopy was regarded as highly controversial in its application for colorectal diseases. These articles paved the way for further peer reviewed studies that firmly established the safety and efficacy of minimally invasive surgery for diseases of the colon and rectum.
In keeping with his motto for embracing significant advances in technology aimed at improving patient outcomes, Dr. Patankar saw the value of robotic-assisted surgery for diseases of the colon and rectum and adopted this technology well before its widespread use. He has amassed a vast experience and is now regarded as a thought leader in this field. He has travelled throughout the United States educating colorectal surgeons in eminent universities in the use of robotic surgery.
This practice has a long-standing commitment to medical excellence and attention to detail. Dr. Patankar stresses empathy and compassionate care and adheres to conservative medical ethics. He has been awarded the physician of the year award based upon confidential patient surveys conducted by Press Ganey at St. Peter’s University Hospital and has also received the New Jersey Monthly Top Doctor accolade for the last three consecutive years.
